A discussion on recent prefabricated houses in Australia with Trias, Fabprefab, Archier, Candour, Otetto, Alexander Symes, Vokes and Peters, and Blok Modular. The symposium featured four thematic sessions—CLT, systems, sustainability, and stereotypes—moderated by USYD faculty.
This symposium was driven by both deep frustration and slight optimism. Amidst Australia’s ongoing housing crisis, where the lack of quality supply is glaring, architects are responsible for designing a mere 5% of all new single- residential homes.Yet, a recent resurgence in prefabricated houses—albeit targeting the middle-upper market—gives us a sense of hope.
The report summarises these discussions, held on September 26, 2024, serving as a brief repository of the current state of prefabricated housing in Australia.
